Diet and Ashtanga Yoga

by Tim
(Winnipeg)

Hello...

I am very new to ashtanga yoga and I have been practising for approximately four months.

My question concerns eating habits for those practicing yoga.

I generally eat clean, but I am wondering if there is a diet specific to ashtanga that would compliment my practise?

Is becoming a vegatarian/ vegan beneficial?

I am told this isn't necessary, but many of the foods and grain feed cattle we consume can be fattening, and loaded with sodium and sugar, along with various chemicals/ oils to preserve their shelf life.

I somehow feel this is a detriment to those who those who wish to undertake a serious practice. Any thoughts?...

Hey Tim,

Such a great question, thank you very much. It is vital for us to learn how to regulate our diet, and make it more sattvic... This is the only way to really excel in our practice.

A great teacher, Neem Karoli Baba, once said that it is actually dangerous to practice Hatha Yoga and not change diet and other aspects in our lifestyle... Food for thought.

Now to your question: I just built a new page on Yoga and Diet, please give it a read and let us know if you have any other questions.

Yoga and Diet

Blessings,
Jeff
